The Mix Fold 2, which seems to be far thinner than the Galaxy Fold4 Samsung debuted last week and apparently has a larger battery, has been unveiled by Chinese consumer electronics giant Xiaomi.

A thin folded-out form factor is made possible by the Mix Fold 2's proprietary "micro waterdrop" hinge, which is said to make advantage of substantial hidden areas on both sides. In order to keep the number of hinge parts to a minimum, Xiaomi has reduced the number of hinge parts to only 87. It also includes a recessed center and is constructed with twin carbon fiber hinge plates on a metal injection molded alloy frame.

The device is larger than the Fold4 but also thinner because of its smartphone mode proportions of 6.36 x 2.9 x 0.44 in (161.6 x 73.9 x 11.2 mm).

The exterior display is a 6.56-inch AMOLED screen produced from Samsung's E5 material that has a resolution of 2,520 by 1,080 and a 21:9 aspect ratio. It also features a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a touch response rate of 240 Hz. Also, there is 10-bit color depth, compatibility for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, 1,000 nits of brightness, and an 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio for the advantage of consumers. Moreover, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which is scratch-resistant, covers the display.

Xiaomi provides an 8.02-inch OLED display using Samsung's flexible ultra-thin Eco glass and LTPO 2.0 backplane technology and aims for a small profile of 0.21 in (5.4 mm) when folded out to its tiny tablet form, as opposed to the Fold4's 0.24 in (6.3 mm).

The company has replaced the polarizer with an ultra-thin color filter and used a black matrix material to reduce screen reflections for an increase in light transmittance of 33% while also reducing power draw by about 25%. The resolution is reportedly 2,160 x 1,914 pixels, and an adaptive refresh rate runs between 1 Hz and 120 Hz. The inner panel's 10-bit color depth and Dolby Vision and HDR10+ compatibility are identical to those of the outside display.

The MIUI Fold 13 operating system, based on Android 12, is used on the Mix Fold 2 device. Inside is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which supports processor rates of up to 3.2 GHz and is the mobile platform of choice for high-end Android devices. Up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1 TB of UFS 3.1 storage can be used with the chipset.
While in folded-out tiny tablet form, the 4,500 mAh battery ensures a full day's worth of use, or even longer if you largely use the outside display. It can be recharged using a 67-W wired fast charger and includes a sizable boron nitride layer coating to disperse heat.

Also, Xiaomi jammed a large-area cooling system, which is said to enhance thermal conductivity by 50% compared to conventional venting systems (VCs).

The foldable's three rear cameras draw on Leica's expertise in imaging and optics. They consist of a 50-megapixel primary camera with an optical image stabilizer based on a Sony IMX766 image sensor, a 13-MP ultra-wide, and an 8-MP telephoto lens. Two different Leica photographic styles are available, and Dolby Vision HDR video recording is also available. Moreover, the Mix Fold 2 has a 20-MP selfie camera built into the outside display.

Dual speakers with Harman Kardon audio and compatibility for immersive Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio round out the list of specifications.

The Mix Fold 2 will be available in black or gold starting on August 16 for a starting price of RMB 8,999 (about US$1,330), tipping the scales at 9.2 oz (262 g), somewhat lighter than the Fold4. At this time, there is no information about wider distribution.
