For some time now, there has been discussion about adding a flexible lens to a smartphone's camera arrangement. Oppo and Xiaomi have both expressed interest in participating. However, the Tecno Phantom X2 Pro with a similar lens appears out of nowhere.

Phantom Mobile is a high-end sub-brand of Tecno, an international tech company with headquarters in Shenzhen and operations in more than 70 countries worldwide, including those in Africa, the Middle East, India, South America, and Eastern Europe. As far as we know, North America does not have easy access to its goods.

The Phantom X2 line, which consists of the X2 5G and the X2 Pro 5G smartphones, was recently introduced in Dubai. Despite being marketed as premium versions, the latter is undoubtedly more intriguing because it comes with the first retractable portrait lens ever made.

The primary benefit of using such a lens is that users can get 2.5x optical magnification in a relatively slim device that is just 8.95 mm thick (0.35 in). With the 50-MP primary camera it's coupled with (which sports a 1/1.3-type sensor), users are reportedly able to take photos "comparable to professional camera shots" thanks to the F1.49-aperture lens's 65 mm focal length and 18.9 cm/7.4 in shallow depth of field. A second 50-MP primary camera and a 13-MP wide camera are also included in the back arrangement.

In order to demonstrate the photographic possibilities of the X2 Pro 5G and to provide advice on the creation of artistic filters, the business has drawn on the creative talents of British photographer, publisher, and film director John Rankin Waddell, also known as just Rankin. Both 4K footage at up to 60 frames per second and sophisticated computational photography is accessible aboard.

A 6.8-inch AMOLED monitor with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and compatibility with the DCI-P3 color gamut is located up front and is protected by tough Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. A 32-MP selfie cam is located in the punch hole.

A multi-core GPU and an octa-core processor are both found inside the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 4-nm mobile platform, which is backed by 12 GB of LPDDR5 Memory and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. All-day use is guaranteed by a 5,160 mAh cell, with 45-W fast charging accessible for those who need to charge quickly. The phone has an AI speech helper named Ella, built-in language translation, and document scanning capabilities. It uses Tecno HiOS 12, an Android 12-based operating system.

There is also an environmentally responsible version of the X2 Pro 5G variant that includes a microfiber rear case created from recovered ocean plastics.

The final device in the line, the X2 5G phone, has a 6.6-inch HD monitor with a 90-Hz frame rate, a 64-MP main camera with RGBW image sensor, a 13-MP wide camera, and a 2-MP shooter. It also has 8 GB of Memory and 256 GB of storage.

Although we don't yet know the price, the Phantom X2 series is anticipated to launch in significant countries by the end of December.
